- 1 Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company (9 officers, 117 enlisted)
- 3 Rifle Companies (18 officers, 561 enlisted)
- 1 Heavy Weapons Company (8 officers, 158 enlisted)
Airborne
A parachute infantry battalion in World War II was composed of the following units:
- 1 Headquarters Company
- 3 Rifle Companies
Ranger
The 1st Ranger Battalion was originally composed of the following units:
- 1 Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company (7 officers, 72 enlisted)
- 6 Companies (18 officers, 354 enlisted)
- 1 Medical Detachment (1 officer, 6 enlisted)
- 1 Chaplain
- 2 Photographers
When the 3rd and 4th Ranger Battalions were formed in 1943, each of the new battalions took two line companies from the 1st Battalion, which resulting in three battalions with two line companies each. The 2nd Ranger Battalion had an organization similar to that of the original 1st Battalion.
